Top 5 mixed drinks

Top 5 mixed drinks for Christmas, and the party season. In fact these 5 are great any time of the year. Admittedly they’re the views of the Cocktail Shaker Boys, but for what it’s worth, these are our top 5 mixed drinks in no particular order.

  1. Whisky Mac (equal measures of whisky and Stones ginger wine)
  2. Gin & Tonic
  3. Vodka & Russchian (mixer in bottles from Schweppes)
  4. Dark Rum & coke
  5. Campari & bitter lemon

Let us know what your favourites are at fun@cocktailshakerboys.co.uk. Our definition of mixed drinks (as opposed to cocktails) is that these 5 all contain only 2 ingredients. And other than Whisky Mac the second ingredient is only to top up and is non-alcoholic. So if cocktails are too much bother, or you don’t have time, or you have too many guests, these 5 are great alternatives. Some are well known classics, some are a bit different. All are great – and that’s official !

Campari & bitter lemon - try it

Campari & bitter lemon - try it

Campari is a not very often chosen type of drink (bitters) but it does work well with many other ingredients. It is fairly sour but is a great drink for Christmas as it’s an antidote to all the really sweet drinks you have at that time of year.

Dark rum and coke – another great drink. So much better than Bacardi (or light rum) and coke. Dark rum has a much more robust flavour so combines with coke well. Alternatively try golden rum or even spiced rum.

The original advertising campaign for Schweppes Russchian carried the strapline “Vodka without Russchian is like Lenin without McCartney !” Genius !! Have a look for Schweppes Russchian in the large supermarkets such as Tesco, Sainsbury and Asda, particularly at Christmas time. It is classed as a mixer and so you’ll find it with the bottles of soda, bitter lemon, ginger ale etc. It has a delicate peach flavour and goes well with vodka. It was a forerunner to the now popular flavoured vodkas. About 30 years ahead of  it’s time.
