Well the weather forecast for the weekend looks good and now is the time to consider what you’ll have to mark a summer weekend. Food & drink. Food bit is inevitably easy. It’ll be a barbecue won’t it?! How about the drink? That could be equally inevitable.
We mixologists suggest 3 themes for you;
- Cocktails with ice-cream
- Go buy some fruit
- Caipirinhas, Mojitos and the like
Frozen cocktails
Fancy cocktails with ice-cream? Dead easy. Just get yourself some tasty ice-cream. And even the old standards will work well : vanilla, strawberry or chocolate.
Find some cocktail recipes that contain cream and substitute the ice-cream for the cream. So now you have a Frozen Grasshopper.
– vanilla ice-cream
– green creme de menthe
– white creme de cacao
Blend or shake with ice (if easier) and then pour into your Martini glass. Sprinkle a little grated dark chocolate on the top. How cool is that? If you see what I mean!
Or a Frozen Alexander
– vanilla ice-cream
– brandy
– brown creme de cacao
Same idea. Blend or shake and then dust with a little nutmeg. Not difficult but stunning.
or how about this one – the Easter Egg?
This one features chocolate ice-cream so you know it’s gonna be popular even before you start.
– 2 scoops in your blender
– 1 msr Advocaat
– 1 part Tia Maria.
It tastes as good as it looks frankly – in a rich kind of a way.
If there ever was a time for frozen cocktails – this weekend is probably it. With temperatures in the mid 20s, it’s time to enjoy your garden, not work in it. Washing the car or going out running need a reward in this weather. Our recipe ;
– garden furniture
– barbecue
– friends and family
– cocktails
– kicking back and enjoying the English summer
Go buy some fruit
Alternatively if ice-cream isn’t your peach melba, why not just buy some fruit – there’s some great English strawberries and raspberries about at the moment. Plus lots of other stuff too of course.
With some of them double strained to get rid of the pips etc, added to some white spirit : gin, vodka, silver tequila or rum you’re off to a good start. Think strawberry daiquiris as your benchmark and you’re underway.
Caipirinhas, Mojitos and the rest of their family
Our third and final tip to get you in the mood for summer cocktails is to try the dead-easy drinks such as the mojito or the caipirinha. These are great cos they’re relatively easy to make, don’t involve much spirit, but look good cos you’ve added mint & lime in the case of the Mojito or just lime in the case of it’s Brazilian cousin. Plus soda and sugar are involved but look up a recipe and have fun.
